Submission Preparation Checklist

All submissions must meet the following requirements.

  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, or RTF document file format.
  • Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  • The text is single-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.

Original Articles

3500 words max, structured abstract 180 words max, 30 references max, 3/5 tables and/or figures.
Papers should follow this structure: Abstract, Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion, Conclusions and References. A maximum of 10 authors is permitted and additional authors should be listed in an ad hoc appendix.

Reviews

4000 words max, structured abstract 250 words max, 40 references max, 3/5 tables and/or figures.
Reviews should be introduced by a general summary of content in the form of an Abstract. Following a short introduction, putting the study into context and defining the aim, reviews will concentrate on the most recent developments in the field. A review should clearly describe the search strategy followed (key words, inclusion, exclusion criteria, search engines, ...). No particular format is required; headings should be used to designate the major divisions of the paper.

Meta-Anayses

3500 words max, structured abstract 300 words max.

All meta-analyses should include a table containing characteristics of studies and a study-selection flow chart (and usually a Forest plot of individual study estimates with an overall estimate for meta-analyses). Extra description or analyses can be included as an appendix. Please submit your text and tables in a Word document (removing EndNote or other referencing software), and your figures as editable files. Reports must conform to PRISMA guidelines.

Brief Communications

About 2000 words, structured abstract 150 words max, 20 references max, 3 tables and/or figures max.

Short reports of results from original research. They should be introduced by a general summary of content in the form of an Abstract. They must provide conclusive findings: preliminary observations or incomplete findings cannot be considered for publication. A maximum of 5 authors is permitted. Additional authors should be listed in an ad hoc Appendix.

Letters to the Editor

800 words max, 5 references max, 4 authors max, no abstract required, 1 table/figure max.

Letters to the Editor should be addressed to the Editors-in-Chief and formatted as short essays expressing the authors' point of view. They may respond to published manuscripts in our journals, or they may provide information or news about a topic related to the Journal's scope. If the letter is in response to a published manuscript, the original manuscript's authors will be given the opportunity to respond.
