A significant exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMF) in hospital personnel may be induced by Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). Exposures, usually low, may be related to magnetotherapy and diathermy procedures.
In surgery departments, not negligible EMFs levels could be reached during electrosurgical activities. Other significant EMF sources in hospitals are the use of defibrillators and hyperthermia procedures in Oncology. High exposures may be induced in operators during transcranial magnetic stimulation. Other sources are possible, but exposure is usually at low level. Regarding possible EMIFs related effects, to date data are mainly limited to MRI operators. Further research in this area is certainly needed: some preliminary results of a multicenter Italian study, still ongoing, will be presented.
